Welcome to Omagh Wheelers

Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club was formed back in 1999 when a number of cycling enthusiasts came together with the ambition of promoting the sport of cycling in the Omagh and surrounding area.

Mickey Gallen was the first ever chairman of the club. He was supported by Seamus Keenan as club secretary and other enthusiastic committee members such as Margaret Curran, Laura McAleer, Mickey McElduff, Terry McCabe, Philip Caldwell and Leo McKenna. Mickey Gallen also introduced Gallen Vehicle Hire as the club’s main sponsor for several years and he remains a stalwart of the club to the present day.

From the outset Omagh Wheelers has always aimed to promote a healthy balance of both touring and racing events and has consistently promoted around 25 official events in each year since its inception.

The Club’s flagship racing event is the McCann Cup, normally held in April. This event, sponsored by Hugh McCann Building and Maintenance Contractor has consistently boasted an entry of over 100 cyclists from all over Ulster.

The toughest of the touring events is without doubt the 100 mile century challenge held in July, with many of the area’s surrounding hills and scenic views being taken in on route.

In 2008 the club introduced a new style kit with Sallys night club becoming the club’s main sponsor with further support once again from Gallen Vehicle Hire and also from Caldwell Motor Factors.

Omagh Wheelers is greatly indebted to all those who have unselfishly volunteered their time and efforts over the years and to the many sponsors for their kind support. Together they have enabled the club to become one of the largest in Ulster and have made a significant contribution to the strong cycling culture that has now taken hold in the local area

Race Report week ending 28 April 2012

Two of Omagh Wheelers top riders,  Marc Potts and Glen Warnock lined up for the Sean Beggs Memorial A Race in Dromore, County Down on Saturday last against an exceptionally strong field of riders including three from the An post Sean Kelly Academy.   With 7 laps of the notorious 9.5 mile circuit ahead, including two climbs, both riders knew this would be no easy race.  The An Post team showed their strength decimating the field but not without Marc Potts spoiling a number of their breaks on the way. Such was the severity of the course that the top 6 came across the finish line with considerable time gaps between them before the first grouping of riders containing Potts and Warnock sprinted for the line with Potts claiming 10th and Warnock 12th place, an excellent performance by the two relative newcomers.

Meanwhile, the Club was represented in the B race by Darragh McCarter, Seamus Keenan and Ciaran O’Hagan as they joined a full field of riders on 5 laps of the same course. In this race, McCarter went off on a break with two others on the third lap, opening up a considerable gap on the remainder of the field. However, it was not to be for the enthusiastic McCarter as he was finally caught by the chasing pack with just 500 metres to the finish line. Three other riders did stay away though, leaving a bunch sprint for 4th place which was won impressively by O’Hagan with Seamus Keenan just a few yards behind in 10th place.

The first club race of the season was held on Tuesday evening last with a record attendance of 77 riders signing on for the event. The riders were set off in 3 different groups with the first group having a 5 minute head start on the second, which in turn had a 4 minute gap on the scratch riders. With a short race of 17 miles these gaps would be hard to close and in the end that proved to be the case as a breakaway from the first group stayed away with newcomers claiming victory in the form of Nial McEnhill in first place ahead of Aidan Kelly, followed by Steven Smyth in third place.

Next up club event is a 32 mile road race taking the riders along the Cookstown Road to Creggan crossroads before turning left for Gortin and then the infamous climb over Gortin Glens before the fast run back to Omagh.
